Mariann Co-ordinating Committee

MCC – CDP is a community-based development programme that is a local initiative to create a healthy community for children and youth through increasing their competency, confidence and improving their quality of life. We work with our beneficiaries and target groups to attain a healthy community in Mariannridge.

PROJECT GOALS, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

To create safe learning environments for children, youth and the broader community to develop their skills and competencies towards becoming healthy and active citizens that reach their full potential.

Early Childhood Development includes baby development talks and education at the local clinic by UKZN OT students, training and support of ECD facilitators and includes assessments and interventions for children at ECD level.

Literacy Intervention includes storytelling and reading for Grade 4 – 5 twice per week, referral to assessments and therapy by UKZN OT students, hosting the Spelling Bee annually

  • OBJECTIVE: To reach and impact kindergarten educators, children aged 3-5 years and primary school learners through literacy intervention programs per year.
  • AIM: To have developed competent facilitators, and confident, capable children towards improved education.

Youth Development includes the personal development and psychosocial support for youth aged 13 – 17years, access to information and training, support for further study and career development

  • OBJECTIVE: To reach and impact youth through diversity workshops/dialogues, Life Skills development, Leadership and Personal Development training, and external partner intervention opportunities.
  • AIM: To develop focused and goal driven young leaders and community activists
  • OBJECTIVE: To teach members of the community basic computer literacy skills to ensure that they have a better chance at becoming employed
  • AIM: to have developed people who are skilled and literate, thus mitigate unemployment within the community.

Food security includes supporting over 40 households with development of doorstep or communal vegetable gardens through provision of seedlings and education about food security

  • OBJECTIVE: To support vulnerable families through the implementation of doorstep food gardens
  • AIM: Having independent and self-sustaining families that are able to grow their own food for consumption as well as for income generation.

Civic literacy includes hosting a 12 session study circle, Civic literacy workshops and campaigns that promote Civic participation and community Activism

  • OBJECTIVE: To empower community leaders through community conversations and campaigns around social and environmental awareness annually.
  • AIM: To create an active community of citizens that reach their full potential and take ownership of their environment as well as responsibility for their own development.
